The reason it doesn't feature USB 3.0 is simply because Mac computers don't offer this option. The drive also features encryption and password protection software and up to 1TB of storage. The My Passport for Mac, on the other hand, offers just one USB 2.0 port. To make up for the lack of connectivity, it's housed in a much slimmer enclosure, compared with the other drive.

WD says it's designed for Mac users who need high-capacity storage in an ultracompact and lightweight design, and makes a great companion for the MacBook Air, which is known to come with limited amount of internal storage space. Both drives are preformatted for Mac and will work with Time Machine right out of the box. They can be reformatted easily to work with Windows, but since they lack USB 3.0, they are better suited for Mac.

The WD 1TB My Passport Studio Portable Hard Drive for Mac is a highly-portable, high-capacity hard drive designed to accompany you and your Mac when you travel. In addition to these features, the drive can backup your data in Apple Time Machine and can be reformatted to work with Windows computers. The preloaded WD Drive Utilities and WD Security software are an added bonus for managing your drive and protecting its data. Two FireWire 800 Ports Two speedy FireWire 800 ports allow you to save and access data at top speeds.

Use the second FireWire port to daisy chain an additional external drive or other peripheral to your Mac. Rated 5 out of 5 by DSHJR from Perfect For My Needs Absolute Plug n' Play. I am using it with my 500GB iMac.

My old WD 500GB HD maxed out after 3 years on Time Machine. I never had any issues with it so I figured I'd go with WD again, and upgraded to 1TB. So far I am very pleased. It's a great looking piece of hardware also and it compliments my Mac nicely. I like the compact size, it takes up only a small footprint on my desk. And just because it's portable doesn't mean that it's only for notebooks. I also like that it's powered by Firewire and has no A/C cords to deal with.

As always with B&H, I got a great deal and they shipped super fast. Rated 5 out of 5 by Edward T. From External back-up Hard Drive for iMac.

Apple notified me that the production run of 1 TB Seagate hard drives in my iMac had had some problems, and that I should get the internal hard drive replaced by them for free. I had not been backing-up my iMac on anything at that time!!! Some quick research on BandH website found this WD external, the better quality of the two WD 1 TB offered. Works seamlessly through iMac Time Machine software. Everything on old hd was stored, and encrypted.

Wiped the iMac's existing hd, and lugged the machine to the Apple store to have new Seagate hd installed and Mountain Lion OS down-loaded. Plugged in Firewire cable to WD hard drive, re-installed everything.

Brand new working computer with no problems, at all. Could not be easier, or work more effectively. Already formatted for Mac, so nothing to do, but plug it in and a few clicks through Mac's intuitive software, and you're there. Rated 5 out of 5 by WyoCowboy from Great HD for Apple Time Machine backups This was the easiest hookup ever!

I used the included Firewire 800 cable to connect the drive to my MacBook Pro and after following the simple instructions, I was done - all in 2 minutes or less. The drive is very quiet. I now have peace of mind that my entire photo colection is backed up with no extra effort on my part. Also, the drive is very small, so you can take it with your laptop if you go on travel. There is a USB cable, as well to connect if you do not have a Firewire 800 port. Rated 5 out of 5 by AVC from Excellent Student HD 1TB is the right size for backing up my MB Retina and acting as my main storage. I plan on buying more of these.

The important thing to look for when buying external harddrives is that it has more than one port in the back. USB mini cables after multiple usage gets worn out and you want to ensure you have access to your HD work if this was to happen. This drive has 2 so this way you can copy the drive incase the worse happens. And great linkage to chain other drives.

Also the durability is solid. I will buy this product again as long as it doesnt become obsolete. Rated 5 out of 5 by JW Purdy from Perfect I was almost out of room on my iMac and need a place to move my images. The My Passport is a perfect solution.

I was able to grab my photo folder and drag it to My Passport and walk away. The folder was huge and I stepped out to dinner. By my return a few hours later to my surprise the transfer was complete. My Mac is like new again with all the free space. I highly recommend this drive and you can't bet the price. Also if you ever change your computer you can just grab your drive and go. This is the perfect product if you are a photographer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Steve B from Works perfectly right out of the box I store my older photographs on the WD 1TB drive. I am currently using about 700 GB of the 1TB.

My 2012 and 2013 photos I still store on my MacBook Pro's drive. I back up everything onto a 2TB external drive using Time Machine. I connect the Time Machine drive using the second FireWire 800 port on the WD 1TB drive. That works really well with both drives connected to my MacBook Pro via its only FireWire 800 port. The WD 1TB drive runs cool and quietly and is quite portable.

The included short cable is just the right length. Rated 4 out of 5 by Deezey from Perfect Portable Needed something to replace my much more costly LaCie drive which died on me (not the first time). Love this drive, quiet, cool, and good looking. Only negative is that the USB is only 2.0.

But I'm almost always using firewire anyway.and its really fast. I toss it into my bike bag many days, and I found that the orange rubber frame from my old rugged drive fits around it perfectly, for added protection.

Also, I keep a firewire cable at home and work so I don't have to worry about having one.
