Diagram 1: A4 Media size and A4 Banner media size Diagram 2: Customer usage of Banner media It can be seen that the banner media size is very different to the normal A4 media size which is often used when printing. Basically, the printer will support printing on to a media size which is the same width as A4 media but which is much longer. The maximum media length which can be used for printing depends on the type of printer.
Basically, the following table lists the maximum length of banner media which may be used for printing on each of the colour network products. Printer Maximum Banner Length (mm) C5100 1200 C5300 1200 C7100 1200 C7200 900 C7300 1200 C7400 900 C7500 1200 C9200 900 C9300 1200 C9400 900 C9500 1200 C9600/C9800 1200 other colour 1200 Table 1: Maximum Banner Lengths for Printers The above table demonstrates that the new generation of C7000 and C9000 printers support banner media to a maximum length of 1200mm.
However, the old generation of C7000 and C9000 printers support banner length to a maximum length of only 900mm. The supported widths of the banner media are the same as those stated in the Product Specification documents for each printer. Diagram 2a: Creating Custom Size Banner Media Diagram 2b: Creating Custom Size Banner Media As shown in diagram 2a & 2b (above), Oki's PCL driver is being used to create a custom sized media which the user can call up from the driver when sending a source file which has the Page Setup dimensions as the Banner media size listed above. This banner size has been set for an old generation C7000 or C9000 printer.
The new generation C7000 and C9000 printers support banner printing to a maximum length of 1200mm. Hence, the 'Length' in diagrams 2a & 2b could be 1200mm for new generation C7000 and C9000 printers. Diagram 2b demonstrates that the user has chosen to name the dimensions of 210mm x 900mm as 'Banner' in the Custom Size window. After all the details have been entered in the Custom Size window then the OK button should be pressed. The user's media size of 210mm x 900mm ('Banner' in this case) can now be called up from the Paper tab of the printer's PCL driver. As shown in diagram 3 (below) the media size named Banner 210.0mm x 900.0mm can be requested from the list of available sizes in the drop down menu. This has been highlighted in blue (below).
The user simply clicks on this media size when banner printing on media which is 210mm x 900mm. Diagram 3: Selecting Banner Media from Media Size Menu Lastly, there is a proven method for feeding banner media into the printer 2. As banner has to be fed from the front feed tray then it is essential that the media is sufficiently located onto the front tray for successful collection by the fed mechanism of the printer. However, the banner media should also be gently fed into the printer without inflicting undue strain on the printer's paper fed mechanism. The best method for doing this is to position the banner media as shown in diagram 4 (below). Ensure that the banner media does not infringe with the exit roller mechanism of the printer's face-down stacker when positioned as shown in diagram 4.
Diagram 4: Position of Banner Media for collection by Printer The banner media can be fed such that it exits to the printer's face-down or face-up stacker. If exiting to the printer's face-down stacker then the user must ensure that the media does not become jammed due to being too thick. It is recommended that banner media is exited to the face-up stacker (rear exit) to ensure as straight a paper path as possible. Exiting banner media to the face-up stacker reduces paper curl due to the paper path being considerably straighter than exiting to the face-down stacker. Finishing Unit cannot handle the width of 320mm wide media and therefore cannot support paper handling of banner media which has the same width as A3 Wide media. Banner media is often available in 320mm x 1200mm size.
However, the width of such a banner would be 320mm which is outwith the paper handling specification of the C9000 Finishing Unit. In the case of a customer wishing to print on 320mm wide banner media, it will be necessary to remove the Finishing Unit from the C9000 printer to avoid paper jamming. Lastly, paper stacking must always be to the face-up finishing stacker when performing banner printing on a C9000 Printer & Finishing Unit. Note 2: Banner media cannot be fed from any of the resident paper bins. It can only be fed from the front feed tray.
