Maya 2009 renders a lot faster on my mac book pro then on my mac pro 8 core. For 1 frame it takes my mac book pro 9 seconds to render and my mac pro 3 minutes. These are my specs.

Maya is one app that actually does shine with the GTX 285. The Quadro FX 5600 does feature more video memory than the GeForce 8800 GT (1.5GB vs 512MB). And, according to one Maya guru, the extra memory (and superior memory management code) of the Quadro workstation cards becomes useful for frame buffering in apps like Maya. This is especially true for redraw of multiple views of the same complex 3D model.
This has been enhanced further by Quadro FX 5600's new integrated memory allocation which allows the card to dynamically allocate on-board RAM to whatever task is at hand rather than have specific hard wired allocations. So rather than say a maximum of 40% of total on-board RAM dedicated to the texture buffer the card can ramp up and down from 80% sharing with the immediate needs of the other buffers.

I have been running Maya 2010 on my 2009 2.26GHz 8-Core Mac Pro for 3 months now. I just sold it (gonna get myself a 12-Core Mac Pro if they every come out) and loaded Maya onto my 2009 17' Macbook pro 3.06GHz. I was speechless to see that the Macbook pro renders faster than my Mac Pro. What's up with that?? Although Maya actually runs faster and with less problems on the Macbook Pro than my Mac Pro, i get nervous every time i jump onto the Macbook Pro because the constant rendering heats up my CPU and GPU a great deal.
